Hana added this detail to the board in the Incident Room when the detectives returned.

Philippa Nicolson had joined the team and you could tell that the more junior members were thrilled to have her there. She had been on the phone when Luke and Hana walked in and now looked up at what Hana had written.

‘You’re kidding me,’ Nicolson said.

‘I know,’ said Luke. ‘What the hell do you make of this?’

She was baffled. When Grace Feist went missing she did not speak French. She wasn’t even taking it at school any longer.

‘Her kidnapper was French,’ Hana said. ‘Or at least spoke French.’

‘Or,’ said Sharma, ‘she was taken to France six years ago.’

‘Unlikely,’ said Luke. ‘Borders were tight when Grace was abducted — she wouldn’t have gotten out of the country easily. And Interpol was all over this, too. If she had turned up in some classroom in the French countryside, we would have known about it.’

‘Maybe she had some sort of access to one of those online French classes. You know, that you go through yourself with audio lessons.’

‘If she was online, then she would have made contact,’ said Nicolson.

Luke was quiet when she said this, unsure of what to think.

‘Have we gotten any further with the Travel Inns?’ he asked to no one in particular. ‘How many are there in London?’

A voice from the back of the room spoke up. It was a quiet, studious woman in her early 30s called Joy Lombardi.

’There are 75 Travel Inns in London, Sir,’ she said. ‘And that’s not counting the outer boroughs. But we are calling all of them to see if Grace stayed there in the weeks preceding her move-in date to Rachel’s flat. We’re starting with hotel locations close to there and moving outwards. So far we’re on hotel number twenty eight.’

‘Good work, Lombardi,’ said Nicolson, speaking for everyone in the room at such a tedious task.

‘Is there anything else we’re missing, apart from the obvious?’ Luke said.

A soft rap of knuckles on the open door made every head in the Incident Room swivel towards it.

It was Rowdy.

‘Emily Feist is downstairs. She wants to see you.’

The look between Nicolson, Luke and Hana was brief before the three detectives stood up and moved towards the door.

‘My office, please, Rowdy,’ said Luke.

‘No,’ said Nicolson. ‘Let go outside to meet her. We’re used to it up here, but I don’t want to frighten her.’

‘Agreed,’ said Hana.

Downstairs in the reception area of Scotland Yard stood Emily Feist. She didn’t look frightened at all. As the detectives approached her, she strode over to them.

‘You have to come back to Grace’s flat,’ Emily said. ‘There’s something you need to see.’
